End of the Drought Pt. 5

I guess we should have expected it, but the explosion brought out more rain, more of a light drizzle, passing within a few minutes. The explosion looked bad, but everybody had cleared out as soon as the fire started, so after everything calmed down, we sent out a search party to look for more squids. I was in the group that found the first one. It was different – this one was standing on its tentacles, shuffling along. It seemed more substantial, darker. It didn’t see us until we got within a few feet. Or, we think it saw us. That’s when it started up the beeping. Faster paced, more musical than the first, sort of a rhythm to it. It didn’t seem threatened, kind of surprising after what we did to the last one. We decided we’d try a more diplomatic approach. First we just talked to it, but it didn’t seem to respond much. More beeps, but no change. So we tried some beeps of our own. Pretty ridiculous sounding, the equivalent of machine baby talk, but it seemed to work. More beeps, anyway. Progress.
