Total Eclipse Of The Heart
We’re up in Charlie’s room, amongst the mess of strewn clothes and magazines. I’ve just re-enacted my bus-stop session with Dylan.
I spin around in Charlie’s desk chair and watch his room swim in and out of focus. When I stop spinning, I realise Charlie’s not said a word for almost 5 minutes, which is like a world record for him. Instead, he’s got a weird look on his face.
“What?”
“Nothing”
“Don’t nothing me. Something’s wrong. Your face is all squinty”
“OK but try and keep calm…”
My heart starts beating really fast and a slight sick feeling has engulfed my stomach. My mind is quick-stepping all over the place. What’s wrong? Why is Charlie looking so worried?
“I caught the bus with Joe today”
“So?”
“So. He’s working with Jasmine Tucker on that Shakespeare thing…” That icky feeling is creeping up my oesophagus now. “And?” My voice is starting to sound all panicky. “And,” Charlie begins, fixing me with a sad look, “Jasmine told the whole group that she and Dylan are a couple now. Officially”
