The Cult
Chapter 3: The Third Reason. You can’t walk into the bookstore without your mother’s face watching you.
The bookstore was quiet for a Friday evening. Normally I avoided public places, but I made an exception tonight.
“What’s on the bestseller list?” I asked the cashier, regretting it the moment I opened my mouth.
“Well, whatever is on there now doesn’t matter. The Answer to Life is the only thing that will ever matter.” He grinned stupidly.
“What is this? The friggin’ Twilight Zone?” I backed away from the counter, not believing that my sixty something year old mother had a cult following.
I should have known; her picture was hanging in the window.
