Jenny's Taxi (Devon and Trazelli series)
She knew she was free. Her name was cleared. She felt pounds lighter, the birds sang cheerier, the sun shone brighter, and the taxi cab was waiting, just for her.
She got in, feeling better than she had in a long time. She could forget about hiding in that basement room and could get a real job to pay for a real apartment and maybe even get a real pet. A Shih Tzu. Named Precious.
The taxi cab missed the turn it should have taken on 5th. Her heart began to hammer. Wait, Jenny, she told herself, Stay cool. Maybe he’s just new on the job. Maybe there’s construction to avoid.
The cabbie didn’t look at her in the mirror. Come to think of it, the cabbie didn’t speak at all. That was weird. They usually ask “Where to?” and attempt some small talk, but this guy… this guy just drove.
Jenny looked out the window. The cab was headed out of town. She reached for the door handle, suddenly worried. The doors were locked, little buttons down. They were driver controlled, a child safety feature.
She was trapped!
