Just A Little Humming

Drew hung up and got out of the car, leaving the keys behind and the doors unlocked.
Walking around to the back of the car he pulled out two large bags that looked like camping material. He would only let me carry my own clothes. We walked hurriedly down to the pine, slid beneath the hole in the fence and went down to our creek.
I sat down carefully, I wanted to help Drew set up camp, but I was feeling a wave of emotion overcoming me. I felt his arm before I realized my face was wet. I leaned against him, letting my salty tears fall on his shirt. He hugged me close, rocking back and forth gently and humming softly.
It was ‘Her Eyes’—the song I’d always thought of as ours, I wondered if he did too.
Slowly the tears dried, I realized I was being silly. My dad, after all, couldn’t make me go anywhere. I paused, remembering I was still 17. I frowned. So maybe he could, but I doubted he would. Especially after this.
Maybe our evil plan would work out after all. I closed my eyes, listening to Drew hum.
