Goodbyes: The Corporation, Incorporated
I gave my speech in the courtyard, the sun dome above providing refuge from the toxic world beyond its confines. Over 1,000 employees were present.
The speech was brief. In it I told my coworkers I had been selected for advancement, that I considered it an incredible opportunity, and that I would soon return in a new capacity. I wanted to tell them that I would miss them and wish them good luck, but Commander Aslög said that restraining emotion and leaving that out would be necessary for a favorable impression with the leadership. I was also made to tell them that this would be the last time they would see me the way I am now. There was the usual forced applause and then everyone returned to their offices except me.
I knew I would soon be leaving for advancement and the reality of it was starting to hit home. People had a habit of vanishing and I hated to leave my wife and young daughter on their own.
“And now for your family,” Commander Aslög said. “I have brought them here for you to say your goodbyes.”
