Now It Seems As Though They’re Here To Stay

Jess crawled into her car and sat in the driveway, staring at her house for a few moments. She pounded on the steering wheel with both hands, what am I doing? This is ridiculous. I need to go to the cops, not the train station.

She flipped open her cell phone and browsed through the contacts. I should call Jake. She found “Jake’s cellâ€? in the list and pressed send. Please pick up Jake, please. She carefully backed the car into the street. “Hey, this is Jake. I can’t get to my phone right now, so leave a message or something.â€?

She had to pull the phone away from her ear to put the car into drive. “Jake. This is Jess. Please give me a call as soon as you get this message. I’m on my way to the police station right now. I need you. It’s been a crazy day.â€? Jess traveled about 100 yards before she heard the explosion. Looking in the rear view mirror she could see her house engulfed in flames.

She picked up her ringing phone, “hello? Jake?â€?

“Jessica, you can’t go to the cops.â€? It wasn’t Jake.
