Just More Heart Ache

“Lexie!” I called her, hoping that she’d stop and turn around. She didn’t turn around but she did stop.

“Do you like me, Lexie?” I asked her slowly, gently.

Now she turned and stared at me, her wet cheeks glistened in the setting sun. “What do you think Jake? Honestly!” Her voice cracked at the last word and I involuntarly cringed at her pain.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” I proded, stepping slightly closer to her.

“What was I going to say? Oh yeah, by the way..” Her voice rose as anger flarred inside her.

“I wish you had.” I answered, barely audably but I was sure she had heard me.

The swing had stopped creaking for it had stopped swinging. There were bugs begining to come out and it was cooling down considerably. I saw Lexie shiver, wether it was because of me or the cold I will never know.

She shook her head. “It’s too late now..” She told me. Then she turned and walked briskly away from me. I watched her until I couldn’t see her and then hung my head in misery and walked home.
