The Search Begins
I stood outside the seediest diner in town. It was the kind of place that gets shut down once a year by the health inspectors. I wouldn’t even drink water there.
But behind the counter was someone I’ve been looking for, and I couldn’t sit in the car all night. I took a deep breath, got out of the car, and walked in.
Nobody looked up as I sat at the counter. The grungy looking woman came over, and asked me in a bored voice what I wanted. “I want to talk to June,” I said. My voice sounded much calmer than I actually was.
She eyed me. “I’m June.”
“I’m looking for your brother.”
I heard movement behind me, but I maintained eye contact with June.
“My brother is dead.”
I smiled. “I’m looking for him anyway.” Someone stood up suddenly behind me, and I turned around quickly to see what happened.
