The Chase

Nothing, of course. Just some men leaving the diner.

When I turned back June had gone. The door to the kitchen was still swinging, and I ran after her.

The line cook looked bored, and only yelled when I knocked the cigarette out of his mouth.

June could move fast for a big lady. She was out the back door which I slammed open. It bounced off the wall and clipped my hip coming back.

I wouldn’t catch her, but I have an idea of where her brother is now.
