Escape to the Castle in the Air

When he saw murder in Roland’s eyes, Jacques had no objection to being pulled away from the scene by a panicked Gabrielle. While the insane king confronted the Keeper, they somehow made it to the gatehouse door.

“Put in your key!” Gabrielle urged him, but Jacques was engrossed with the scene outside. “Jacques! My key can’t do this! I can’t do this!”

Not understanding but acting nevertheless, Jacques slid his silver key into the lock.

“Inside the castle is a room with two doors at opposite ends,” she said. “It has no windows. Purple tapestries cover the walls. The only furnishing is a stone bench. Can you see it in your mind?”

He nodded uncertainly.

“Open this door to that room.”

Jacques turned his key as Cain fell to the ground. He and Gabrielle quickly jumped through. She hurriedly pulled the door closed behind them, rain-soaked hair clinging to the sides of her face.

“Where is this place?” asked Jacques, looking puzzledly around the space.

“I don’t know,” said Gabrielle. “You just created it.”
