Memory

We were at the Creek again. She looked pensive.
Me: Is something wrong?
Her: oh, it’s nothing.
I frowned, taking her hands in mine.
Me: It doesn’t look like nothing.
She turned away from me.
Me: I’m always here, you can tell me anything. Your secrets are safe with me.
I smiled at the last part.
She sighed. Her: It’s just… Dad’s not as happy as I’d like him to be.
I paused, considering that. Me: You’re worrying about moving.
She shrugged. Her: It’s the first time in a while I’ve had something to lose by moving.
Me: Don’t think about it. Just enjoy life now, with me. If he throws us the curveball, we’ll deal with it then.
She gave me a small smile. Her: Promise?
Me: Promise.

As soon as the memory was written, I collapsed on my bed, silent sobs wracking through my body.
