Remembering Gossip

I don’t know why I even try… to avoid people like Amelia, I mean. Even though I’d ran out the door, she was somehow right next to me, eager to pick up on the next good bit of gossip. Oh well, gossip might be my friend today.
“Paige, did I just hear you say you were going to see Drew later? What’s going on?” her eyes burned with curiosity, also a little jealousy.
“Oh,” I shrugged, “It’s no big deal. We’re just going to study for the Miss Turner’s english test… it’s on Monday.”
She blinked, “You’re… you’re going to be with him after school?”
The incredulity rang out clear in her voice, “ho- How?” she asked.
I shrugged, “Sometimes it pays to be persistently annoying,” I saw the thoughtful look in her eyes and instantly back-tracked, “But not always. I kind of had the advantage of seeing him break down yesterday. I comforted him.”
Ok, not totally true but, like I said, gossip was my friend for now, as long as I was controlling it, and it wasn’t controlling me. I was dancing on a fine line.
