Very inspired and thoughtful ficlet. There is always that old metaphor of flying off like a bird to run away from life, but then you flip it around with the bird’s point of view. Very nice.

I like it. I like that you have detail without too much. People can see the bird however they like, and the family however they like, but it’s a universal enough theme that it’s relatable, and puts an instant image in your head.
