I drove to her house in silence, leaving her to her thoughts. When I pulled up to her dark house, I cut the engine. I turned towards her, “Ceirra?”
“Yes?” she asked, looking at me. She seemed relatively calm and accepting, so I figured I had a good shot at this.
“Are you free tomorrow to go on an actual date with me? Instead of one that’s, you know, been contrived by Anima,” I added jokingly.
She bit her lip indecisively, “I… um… it’s been really great tonight, but I’m just… not sure.”
“Do you not like me? Because if you don’t, I can accept that, I guess…” I let the question drop, though I was certain of the answer.
“No,” she said quickly, “It’s just…”
“Different,” I finished for her.
She sighed, “And complicated.”
Ah, see? This is where I differ from the world. “Oh, I don’t know if it’s that complicated,” I said casually, “I mean, I love you, and you at least like me, so technically nothing should stand in our way. But I suppose, all the same…”
“It’s still different,” she finished.
