Gonna Die

I can see the airport from here, and I think I know enough to at least get us on the ground in one piece. Well, maybe two or three, but we might be able to walk away from it.”

“Steve, are you sure?” Kate asked.

“No, I’m not sure about it! What else can we do though? What I really need is a licensed pilot! Go check on Trax.”

Kate walked back to the passenger area of the plane. “He’s alive, but his pulse is weak and he’s not moving. You’re gonna have to do this, Steve. Can you do it?”

Steve fumbled through the aircraft checklist, trying to remember how to land the plane. “Why didn’t I pay more attention?! Damn! Here, O.K., first I gotta slow ‘er down. He pulled back the throttle and watched as the airspeed indicator dropped.”

“We’re all gonna die!” Susan screamed. “It’s pointless to even try! It’s fate! We’re gonna crash and burn together in one big beautiful ball of flame, Katie-bear!”

“Will you shut her up, for crying out loud?!” Steve said. He flipped on the radio to drown out Susan’s voice.
