A Thing For Beauty cont'd

She glanced over to where the woman was standing. “This is for you.â€? She said, presenting Annie with a flower. A yellow flower. Not even a dull, brown flower. A yellow flower. “But how? I mean thank you,â€? said Annie. The woman had a twinkle in her eye. I’ll protect this one, for sure. Annie thought. “The woman is magic.â€? Annie told her aunts. “Magic? Impossible.â€? Her Aunt Margot said. “Magic? Like the old man in my village said, ‘Magic is for heathens and fools.’â€? Aunt Hanna remarked. Aunt Ana sat in the corner and nodded briefly. She’s magic all the same. Annie thought. “Goodnight, yellow flower.â€? She whispered softly. Tonight, she fell asleep. When she awoke, Annie quickly ran see if they would have soup today. She was startled, instead, by a soldier. “Where’d you get that flower?â€? he asked. “I…I found it.â€? she stammered. She didn’t want to get the woman in trouble. In one swift movement, he grabbed the flower, and bit off the head. Annie stood horrified as he laughed. Yellow pollen outlined his mouth.
