The Rest of "The Sun Was Shining"
We walked to the lunchroom to retrieve my brother. “Your father and cousin are alright.â? She said. But what happened? The sun is shining with all his might, right? In the car, we listened to the radio. It wasn’t until then that it sunk in. The Twin Towers? The greeters of the world?
When we got home, my mother told us that she had been in the kitchen, when her sister told her to turn on the television. She was attacked with images of destruction. Phone calls began to dominate her time. “Is He okay?â? many asked her. A car appeared on the street, and pulled into our driveway. It was a friend of my father’s, or as we fondly called him, Uncle Steve. “Is He okay? You don’t know how much that man means to me!â? with those words he broke down and cried, whimpering like a small child.
The sun kept shining, although it was mentally “the middle of the nightâ?. It seemed impossible for it to shine. So much darkness surrounded us, but the sun was, quite literally, still shining.
