When You Look Me In the Eyes

I searched my brain just to make sure I was available.
“I don’t think I’m doing anything, why?” I replied.
Mitch smiled, “Just meet me here at three.”
He left, but before going to my next class, I stood there to watch him go.

I met him at his locker and we walked to the nearby Starbucks. We sat and talked for an hour and a half and then walked home.
I noticed something when I was talking to him. When I talk to him, I talk about personal things that I rarely even bring up around Mallory.
“I don’t know. It’s just, after breaking up with Josh last year, it’s like I can’t find anybody anymore. It’s like he ruined me or something,” I had said to him.
Other people do get lonely, you know,” he reminded me.
“I know,” I said, “sometimes I just feel like I’m the only one, though.”
“You’re not, trust me,” he said, “you have way too many people thinking about you and caring about you for you to ever be lonely,” he told me.
Then he looked me in the eyes and I felt something inside of me say, Oh, crap.
