Just Friends

“Mal, I didn’t think it was that big of a deal,” I tried to explain to her, “I mean, it’s just Mitch West.”
Mallory was shocked, “Just Mitch West? Mitch West – only one of the hottest guys in the entire school.”
I was quiet at first. I didn’t know what to say to this. Yeah, sure, Mitch was hot, but I didn’t feel the same way about the situation as Mallory did.
“So what?” I asked, “it’s not like it meant anything, anyway. We’re just friends.”
Mallory had a suspicious look on her face, “Sure.”
“Mallory, I’m serious. He and I are nothing more than friends who just hang out and talk,” I defended myself strongly.
“Okay, sorry,” Mallory ended the conversation.
The rest of lunch was silent and awkward.
It was probably the longest Mallory and I had gone without talking to each other during the day.
I hated getting in little spats with her over pointless things because even though they were only little spats and even though they were over pointless things, it still meant something when we argued.
