The Gift

History was after lunch and I couldn’t have been any happier to get away from Mallory for a little while. I just had to let her, and possibly myself, blow off some steam.
I slammed my locker loudly after retrieving my history book and walked quickly to class. I didn’t notice he was right there, but Mitch turned to see me and cracked a joke, “That’s right. Burn off those calories from lunch,” he was referring to my fast walking.
I stopped to explain, “I’m blowing off steam, not burning off calories.”
“Is it something you wanna talk about?” he asked genuinely.
I smiled, “No, not right now, but thanks.”
Awkward silence.
“So anyway you were saying yesterday that you like Coldplay, right?” he confirmed as he stood up straight from leaning up against his locker.
“Yeah, why?” I asked.
He opened his locker and pulled out a CD.
“Viva la Vida. I got it last night,” he handed me the CD.
I’d wanted it for a couple of weeks now, “Wow, Mitch, you didn’t have to do this.”
“I wanted to,” he walked away to class.
