The Stairwell to Nowhere (Unconventional Zen Master Challenge)

On the corner of Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, California, sits a small, unassuming strip mall.

Between Wong’s Dry Cleaning and Big Kahuna Head Shop stands a glass door, unmarked save for the address stenciled in faded white. The door, which is never locked, leads to a darkened stairwell. From the outside, there appears to be no second floor to this strip mall, making the need for stairs somewhat absurd. Very few passers-by have ever had the courage to open the door, though they all stop and ponder the stairwell to nowhere.

“Dude, come on. Do it.â€? Brent jammed his skateboard into Todd’s side.

“No way man. You remember Tony’s uncle? He knew a guy who went up those stairs once. Dude never came back.â€?

“Come on. Just go up halfway. I’ll buy you a taco for every step you take up the stairs.â€?

Being broke, the promise of free tacos is an incredible motivator. “Damn. Ok, hold my board.â€? Todd placed his hand on the metal bar to 113-B Beach Boulevard and pushed through the doorway.
