The Stairwell to Nowhere (Unconventional Zen Master Challenge)
On the corner of Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, California, sits a small, unassuming strip mall.
Between Wong’s Dry Cleaning and Big Kahuna Head Shop stands a glass door, unmarked save for the address stenciled in faded white. The door, which is never locked, leads to a darkened stairwell. From the outside, there appears to be no second floor to this strip mall, making the need for stairs somewhat absurd. Very few passers-by have ever had the courage to open the door, though they all stop and ponder the stairwell to nowhere.
“Dude, come on. Do it.â? Brent jammed his skateboard into Todd’s side.
“No way man. You remember Tony’s uncle? He knew a guy who went up those stairs once. Dude never came back.â?
“Come on. Just go up halfway. I’ll buy you a taco for every step you take up the stairs.â?
Being broke, the promise of free tacos is an incredible motivator. “Damn. Ok, hold my board.â? Todd placed his hand on the metal bar to 113-B Beach Boulevard and pushed through the doorway.
