There are subtle differences here. The Davis version emphasizes more the need for States’ rights, over a strong central government. so it’s “governments,” rather than “government” of the people…
Most of the changes to the original speech are in the first two paragraphs (in the prequel). Lincoln referred to the United States as one nation, whereas Davis, in my version, refers to them as a set of independent states. This piece was inspired by a line in National Treasure 2, where Nicholas Cage’s character says that before the Civil War, the U.S. was referred to as “are” plural, and afterward the U.S. was referred to as “is” singular…
cool idea but i felt like maybe it could have been better conveyed…like you could have described the surroundings or something instead of jumping straight into the speech. but thanks for entering!
I also didn’t pick up on the differences at first, but I went back and looked for them. Interesting that they changed the pronoun from plural to singular after the Civil War. I’ve been meaning to watch that film. I’m even more interested after reading this!
