Perfect Silence
Jack finally blinked & ran the back of his fingers down Anna’s cheek. She closed her eyes & took his hand spreading his palm across her cheek. When she opened her eyes Jack was closer, only an insignificant inch remaining between them. He towered over her, with his eyes locked in hers. Anna still couldn’t figure out the expression behind his empty eyes. But then she couldn’t really think about anything as her breathing seemed to stop. But Jack didn’t lean in. And neither did Anna. Both of them just stood there, hand in hand on Anna’s cheek, trying to read each other’s thoughts in their eyes.
A loud gasp interuppted the absolute silence, & it came from Anna as she abruptly remembered to breathe. Jack blinked again & he pulled Anna closer to fill the remaining space. But Anna placed her hands on his chest “Jack..”
For a third time Jack blinked, but this time he seemed to come back from where ever he’d been. He smiled & his eyes no longer looked empty. “It’s okay.” He put his arm around her, & walked her home.
