“Everything started then.” Scarlet continued. “Oh, if you had seen their faces! You would have done the same thing!” Charlie walked closer to her.
“Whose faces?” She ignored him.
“I wasn’t quite so careful, then. First time, first time, it was community service! That just fed the flame! Second time, they put me in jail.” Her eyes lowered “My parents agreed to pay the bail, and college tuition here; on one condition, I could never return to their house.” Scarlet found Holden standing at the door.
“That was the story I was never supposed to hear.” He didn’t ask; simlpy stated it. “Why?”
“I was afraid you,” she turned to Charlie. “And you, would hate me.” Holden grabbed her in his arms.
“I could never hate you. Don’t you ever think things like that again.” As black tears slid down the tip of her nose, she thought, The thing about mascara is, it shows your true feelings.
