The Plain Truth
“It’s not going to work, love…”
She sobbed to herself. He slammed his fist against the door jamb.
“There’s no way we can get the money…”
He paced, running his fingers through his hair. She curled up in a ball on the bed.
“We can’t be together, dear…”
“There has to be a way…”
“We’ve tried everything, even things we said we’d never try. It’s not enough…”
“We just need to do more!”
“There is no more. There’s no time left. That’s it.”
“It can’t be. That’s not possible.”
He closed the door to the bedroom. She ran to the door and leaned against it, slowly tracing a line down it with her hand.
“This is it, love…”
“No.”
“It is…”
“No.”
“I can’t…”
“We can.”
“You’re just fooling yourself, love, because you just don’t want to face it.”
“No!!! There’s always a way…”
“There’s not any more… This is it. There’s no way for me to get out there. That’s the plain truth, love…Let’s talk later.”
He hung up the phone, she sobbed against the door in her empty house.
”...But I need you.”
