Amethyst Frontier: Probe Delivered

“Probe away,” Lucy said watching the viewscreen.
The display showed the looming Karama 2000 meters away, as the probe and a sprawling tether moved forward towards the aft section of the ship.
“Probe moving at 2 meters per second and climbing. ETA just under two minutes.” the comms officer reported.
“I hope this works.” Frosty said.
There came a click over communications and Damien Kosta’s voice sprouted over the speakers, “Bridge? Engineering,”
“What’s up, Kosta?”
“The probe is loosing power, and it’s now drawing off our batteries.”
“What the hell is going?” Frosty’s frustration was clear, “Will it make it to the Karama,”
“Yes, so long as we continue to use the tether as an umbilical.”
“What the power hit to the Amethyst?”
“Hold on,” there was a crackle amidst the silence, and then, “Curiouser and Curiouser,” said the engineer, “As it approaches the Karama, the power drain stabilizes,”
“Perhaps we should move closer?” Lucy suggested.
“The Amethyst stays until the captain says otherwise,”
