Guilty
My lawyer prepared me for trial. He said that the fact that I was blind would surely assist my case. Who would send a blind boy to jail?
We entered the courtroom and the bailiff read our case to the judge. “The People vs. Jeremy Watkins for the murder of Naomi Kleinâ? “What?â? I asked my lawyer, “Who’s Naomi Klein?â? “That’s the girl they think you killed Jeremy.â? This was all wrong. I didn’t kill Naomi Klein! I don’t even know anyone named Naomi Klein. This is supposed to be about Kari Ann. Who is Naomi Klein??
“How do you plead?â? the judge asked. “Not guilty.â? I answered, though that was not the plan. My lawyer yanked me down and whispered furiously in my ear. I argued with him saying that I didn’t know whom this girl was and I couldn’t plead guilty. He responded by arguing that I was perfectly ready to plead guilty before. I couldn’t possibly tell him that there was another girl.
“Guiltyâ? I said.
