“Essie, my problems are nothing you should worry about. You have to understand that,” he said desperately. Everything was desperate about him lately. “Well, how do you expect to better your daughter if you aren’t willing to better yourself?” I demanded. I wasn’t going to stop now. “Scott Miracle, stop pretending your qualms don’t exist. You taught me that never works. Why can’t you take your own advice? You’re the one who made me learn that everybody has feelings, no matter who they are. Including you!” I yelled, a bit too loudly. Some people were already staring at us. My father’s eyes were transfixed on a speak on the floor. “Remember what you always used to say?” he said, softly. “That there’s always a rainbow after the storm? Those words mean more to me now than they ever did,” he murmured. And then he began to sing.
