Remembering My Pain

“Paige,” my voice was strangled, “Paige, I love her. I love her. I have to be with her. Please tell me where she is, please.”
Unaccountably, Paige burst into tears. I stared at her, nonplussed. What on earth was wrong now?
“You want to know something sick?” she asked after a long moment of unexplained sobbing, “Every man I’ve ever gotten close to has hurt me. I know you love her Drew, goddammit, you show me that ever fucking day. I have to work to make you smile, and I’ve only made you laugh twice. Your pain is so… enormous, I can’t hope to conquer it. That’s the funny thing about love- it gives someone the power to hurt you beyond repair. I can’t watch you hurt yourself over this again,” She moved forward, taking my hand- I pulled away. “Imagine losing her again, Drew, how painful that will be.” I flinched at the ghost of my pain, which had, until now, felt as though it had vanished completely.
Suddenly Paige frowned and looked down at her jeans, “Oh honestly, what is it?” She pulled out her phone.
