Remembering Her Mom

“Oh thank goodness,” Angela breathed on the other line, “I thought you were never going to pick up.”
“What is it, Angela?” I asked, annoyed that she’d been calling me all the way through my conversation with Drew. If it was so important, why hadn’t she told me what was going on yet? Drew was standing a foot away staring at me strangely.
“PVS is a no-go,” she said, “We thought there were some signs of… well, you know all that stuff, but it turned out to be negative.”
“Well, that’s good to know, I guess, but does it really necessitate calling me five times?”
“Um, Paige,” Angela sighed, “Maybe it’s good you already told Drew. Her mom’s finally giving in. She’s going to agree to pull the plug.”
“No!” I gasped, although one small, selfish part of me was suddenly euphoric. I quickly drowned it out guiltily. “But there’s still a possibility of PVS in the future,” I said, although I knew it wouldn’t matter.
“I know,” Angela sighed, “Your flight is booked, by the way. It’s in an hour. You can thank me later.”
