Mary and Derek (well, a very small segment of it)
“Why do you look so sad? Wazzup?”
“It’s not a big deal” Mary said staring out the car window. “Family drama, that’s all. My mom’s been sad lately. Some friend she knew died. Kind of unexpected, but I barely knew the guy, so it doesn’t matter.â?
“How did they know each other?â?
“We were neighbors back in the city. I met him once. You could tell he was a little… different. War messed with his mind a little. Maybe it wasn’t so unexpected after all.â?
“How did he die anyway? Was it an accident?â? She tossed her long hair into her face so he could not read the expression on her face.
“I told you! War did something to him! I don’t want to talk about it.â?
Derek reached for her hand. It felt clammy, but comforting to touch. “Does it bring back memories?”
She pulled away. “Maybe it does! Ever thought about that! No, I don’t think you have, because you’re too busy playing ‘therapist’ to even consider how it makes me feel!â? She turned her back towards him so she could look out the window again.
