I think the story would be stronger if you restructured it to begin with nothing ever happens around here, and ending with the earthquake, making it the cliffhanger. It’s a good idea to always end your Ficlets at a point where your reader asks, “What happens next?” and make them want to read more.

Cute and fun bit of story. Breaking it apart from being one giant paragraph might help readability.
