Why Do We Ficlet? (Yes, this could be a challenge if you wanted it to be)
Don’t we all love stories? We must. Every little kid has a passion for stories. When I was little, I used to beg my mom to retell the five stories of how my uncles, aunts, and grandparents got engaged. (And there were some pretty strange ones too….like the ring in the shoe, or dressing up as Santa on Christmas Day….my dad hid his engagement ring in his mouth and “kissed it” on to my mom’s finger.) Adventurers in medival times were payed to tell stories. Bards were professional singing story-tellers. The richest person in England is a story teller! (J.K. Rowling, for all of you not familiar with Harry Potter.)
So why do we love them so much? Why do we ficlet? Is it a desire for adjectives? A passion for verbs? The same reason singers love singing; artists love drawing; architects love designing. Maybe it’s just being able to convey feelings that you wouldn’t be able to share any other way. Maybe just the feel of words flowing almost involuntarily from your pen. What do you think? Why do we love writing?
