“What?â? I shook my head, clearing my mind. She looked at me with an I-know-what-you’re-thinking look. Vanessa pointed to the boy still standing in the doorway and looked in my face. “He’s really something, huh?â?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!â? I protested. I touched my cheek, and felt it getting warmer.
“Oh, sure, that explains the red in your face, doesn’t it?â? she giggled. I flushed with embarrassment again. Seeing that she hurt me, Vanessa wrapped her arm around my shoulder. “It’s okay. He looks pretty nice. Get to know him.â?
And with that, she walked out of the classroom to her next class. I had barely heard the bell ring for first period. I saw the boy walk over to Mrs. Ryans, my homeroom teacher, his messenger bag slouched against his curved form, and whisper something to her. I stayed behind in the classroom, fixing the bookshelves to see what he wanted.“…So, you’re the new student?â? Mrs. Ryan was saying. The boy nodded, looked in my direction, and smiled that perfect smile.
