Prayer is not prohibited in schools. In fact, it’s illegal to prohibit student prayer that does not interfere with class time. There is a common misconception that prayer is prohibited in schools, but this is not the case. Mandatory prayer in school is prohibited, as it should be. In fact, many schools have religious clubs where prayer is encouraged, and these are legal and encouraged. You do make some solid points though here, and I commend you for tackling a controversial subject.
Reminds me of the time in 3rd or 4th grade that my teacher tried to make us all say grace before lunch. Well, I say try, but she succeeded pretty much every day in leading the class in prayer…everyone except me, of course. Rebel without a prayer, that was me!
well this country was founded on certain moral beliefs stemming from a certain western cultural religion….. :P I like that your ficlet stays within the frame of the rhetorical question, not begging for judgment.
totally agree with all the above. But I must admit… if prayer became mandatory we would have issues… because how do you decided which god is the right one to force the children to pray to?
i don’t believe in praying, but i don’t say that people shouldn’t be allowed to do that sort of thing.
schools used to go overboard with it, as we all know, but not so much anymore. besides, if people got so upset about it, they could just go to public schools and complain about the pledge of allegiance..
you brought up some good points, and i sort of agree with you
How can you prohibit prayer? Sometimes, you don’t even know when somebody’s praying. It’s a silent, reverent thing to do. I don’t know why. I also have noticed that in the Pledge of Alleigance and on dollar bills and pennies, it does say “one nation under God” and “In God we trust”
