Perhaps I should clarify: I’m all for better health, longer lives and such. But I don’t want there to be a superior, “manufactured” breed of humans. That, in my mind, is just wrong. The movie Gattaca and the book Brave New World are examples of the direction I don’t want genetic engineering to take.
Makes me shudder at the flaws society would render obsolete.. will only blue eyes blondes survive?? Reeks of Nazi Germany and sci -fi but sadly all to real when parents can choose the gender of a child and elimintae it all together if it is retarted or some other flaw society deems not perfect. Weve become a nation o f designer babies lets hope not.
I agree with you… a superior “manufactured” breed is not right. The human race will evolve of time, at its own speed like it was suppose to. Us humans just try and rush things way to much…
Interesting. I love Gattaca, and am having a hard time getting through A Brave New World (it’s been sitting on my shelf for months now). I’m interested to know at what point you disagree with bionic engineering? How do you feel about pacemakers? Artificial Insemination? Where is this line? Is it just at messing with the DNA ? Why? If you could eliminate Parkinson’s months before birth, you’d be against it? Or would that be ok?
Personally, I’m all for genetic enhancement. I’m sure my lack of belief in anything supernatural is part of it. If we have the ability to eradicate disease as a species, why not do it? My only objection to it is that it is something that will only be available to the wealthy, thus creating an even larger divide between the classes. If we could figure out a way to keep that from happening, we should absolutely do everything we can to advance our species.
Yes, yes, yes! So many diseases could be prevented…but yes, the idea of a “manufactured” race does seem particularly horrific, at least in my mind. Another issue to be brought up is also overpopulation. I don’t want people to die, but…therein lies the problem.
