“Sentimental?â€? Kate gave a disbelieving cough. “The man who thinks Jean Claude VanDamme displays depth and range as an actor is discussing sentiments? What value – sentimental or otherwise – does it have?â€? She demanded.

“I can’t explain it,â€? Adam shrugged. “I bought that couch with my first paycheck from the radio station.â€?

“But it’s ugly and it has five loose springs.â€?

“Four,â€? Adam corrected.

“It’s still as uncomfortable as it is ugly,â€? Kate countered.

“And that’s saying a lot,â€? Joe mumbled. He felt kind of uncomfortable himself, witnessing their umpteenth fight, each time hoping Kate would come to her senses. And this was why he hated showing them places – not because he wouldn’t get the commission, or because he knew Adam would hate it, but because he couldn’t stand the way Kate allowed herself to be treated.
