Dark Shadow

“But what about Lissom?” Judith pressed. I sighed, then flew closer to her.
“Lord Vlagmartt will do with him…as he pleases. He gave himself as a willing sacrifice. I want you to know that.”
“Will he kill him?” Lucas’ eyes were tearful. I hesitated. “Will he kill him?” He asked more forcefully.
“It is… probable.” I closed my eyes. “It is necessary for him to give his life, if we are to find the Name.”

We all drifted off to sleep, one by one. In the morning, the gloomy presence of last night’s conversation loomed over our heads.
“Naystrium.” Judith whispered. “A dark shadow is following us.” I showed no sign of hearing. “Did you hear me? A dark-”
“I heard you.” I whispered sharply. “Eyes ahead. We will attack when the moment is right.” Lucas’ hand flew to his hilt.
“I’m ready.” He said under his breath. I gave a sharp flick of my wrist, and his sword flew upon our presumed enemy.
The shadow’s hand caught it, and a single drop of blood dropped. “Put away your weapons.”
