Thanks, everyone! This is essentially how Andersen ended The Little Mermaid originally, although my recollection of it failed me a little and it turns out that I accidentally incorporated a little of the Echo and Narcissus myth into it…

I liked the storytelling thing., as well as the story itself.

I really enjoyed it. It flowed so well, was sad but managed to be amazingly beautiful as well. I don’t know if it would be so great without the picture, but with it…it’s a masterpiece. Good job.

Oh, I definitely think the picture makes the story that much more effective. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, it’s worth at least 1024 characters…

Wow this is masterful writing. I’ve read a lot of your ficlets, but I think this is one of the most thoughtful, moving ones yet. You had me going like a little school girl for a while.

You did forget one thing (or just didn’t know about it). It’s actually her sisters who give her the dagger. They make a deal with the sea witch. They cut off their hair (where a mermaid’s magic is) in exchange for the dagger to kill the prince and return to the sea.
