Beep

I spent the day in my pajamas, watching kid’s shows on television and eating whatever I felt like eating.

Max called a few more times, to bug me about saying yes to Jake’s offer. I ignored him.

Jake called once, even. Luckily, the answering machine started before I, caught up in some television show about little bugs that were all dancing and singing their ABC ’s, could get it and I just let him leave his message.

“Hey, um, Jo. Hi. It’s Jake. I was, eh, wondering if you, uh, wanted to go out to eat next weekend? I guess you’re, um, busy, so I’ll see you at school tomorrow.” Pause, then in a more pleading voice,” Jo, I know you’re there. Please answer…” Pause, sigh. “Ok, don’t. But I really wish that you would say yes. I’m not trying to force you into anything, but I’d really like to get to know you. So, um, see you tomorrow.” Beep.

I stopped cold. The dancing bugs with their ABC song was completely forgotten now, and so was everything else.

I would have to see him the next day.
