“Then you forgot about me,” Sheila said.
“Then I made the unwise decision to accept her offer.”
“Which was?” Sheila asked.
“To go to her apartment,” I almost whispered, hoping if she didn’t hear, it wouldn’t be real. But it was real, and the sharp intake of breath made me aware of that. “She’s attractive – not more than you, but -.”
“Younger?” Sheila asked. “More fit?”
“I guess so,” I admitted. “And she liked me. Not my job, or what I could do for her, or how I helped out, just – me.”
“You think I don’t?”
“Sometimes I feel like you’d have any guy who helped out and played with the kids. But, she made me feel – like I had no responsibilities.”
“Well, you do!”
“Sheila, why are you upset?” Dr. Hall asked.
“She gave him something I can’t, so he’ll find another one because I can’t make him feel that he has no responsibilities. He’s the father of our kids, his job pays for -.”
“Do you need him, or the things he can give you?” Dr. Hall asked.
I inhaled a deep breath of hope.
