Taking Care of Business

Setting fire to the orphanage was easy, Julian didn’t have to think twice. The drive to Harmony Waye was long, giving him time to think about how to separate Devon from her family without a huge ruckus.

He parked near the park. It was too light out to try anything, too many people. He planned for the cover of darkness, maybe even steal her from her bed. But it had to be fast, and it had to be tonight, no later!

Then he saw her, here, at the park, feeding the ducks. Those damned ducks! Her sister walked away with her camera. He got out of the car.

He stood near the pond, near Devon, not looking at her. He threw a rock near some ducks, she’d hate that. It worked.

“Hey Mister! Don’t throw rocks! Hey! You’re that creepy lawyer who left the courtroom!”

“I had another case. In fact, you can help me, Devon.”

The little girl felt he wasn’t a stranger, especially since he knew her name. “Okay..”

He led her to his car on the premise of getting some pictures for her to look at of “criminals”.

He shoved her in.
