The Revelation

“I’m not quite sure how to tell you this, but… Derek is your brother.”

“What!!! Like I’m going to believe you!”

“Honey, it was a one time thing. Your parents were newly married and it was around when your mom had her depression problems. She wouldn’t even get out of bed. Well they were down for a visit and I invited your dad and a friend of his to a party. We all got drunk and…”

I just sat there staring at her. How could I believe this? She was suppose to be my mom’s best friend.

”... we agreed to never speak of it again. He really loved your mom and she was like my sister. We didn’t want to ruin those relationships.”

“What about Derek?” I asked with a queasy feeling.

“David doesn’t know. I never told him. I only told Derek when I figured he was old enough to handle it. I never thought you guys would come back.”

I didn’t know what to say. I just got up and ran out to my car and drove straight home. I sat on the edge of my bed and dialed the number. On the third ring he picked up. “Dad?”
