I agree about the nonsense,.. I try to sequel stuff like that and make a coherent story out of them as a way to combat the garbage. That’s the way the Fruit escping stories with MBTM and others started.
I do think you’re right. But on the other hand, I don’t think it’s really kosher to “call out” a person by name in one of these ficlets. You could get the point across without referencing the specific person by name.
I know, and I do agree, R_M. I just thought that for an example, however…well, you are still right. Just because she’s not here anymore probably doesn’t give me a reason to put up the name.
Nonsense Ficlets don’t really bother me, so long as they aren’t abusive, not tagged properly, or attack anybody. Lewis Carroll was a master of nonsense, as was Douglas Adams.
I agree with BARomero *. Nonsense has it’s place, and is sometimes entertaining. But *Stovohobo is right to call out this particular brand of nonsense, which isn’t meant to entertain or do much of anything other than annoy.
Whew, I just thought it was some sort of generational humor I wasn’t getting. And there is a certain amount of let-down after you get all excited that someone did a sequel, and then…pffffft. It’s one line of gibberish. Nonsense is fine and all, but to some extent I think it comes across as rude or flippant when you do that kind of sequel to a serious ficlet.
I think I actually read that story. The one with the chicken. I thought it was very childish. And it aggervated me that someone would actually write that for no reason. So I agree with this. :]]
A purely nonsensical Ficlet is wonderful (there was an early one about library elves that was just absurd to the extreme). . However, writing a one-sentence Ficlet or filling up half of the page with punctuation just to meet the character limit is rude to the original author, the readers, and Ficlets in general. . And THX did suffer the gravest of injustices in this line.
I agree with this in some sense- however, I think it is more about how the nonsensical is handled.
Nonsense can be brilliant, when used in the right way- the problem is that typing meaningless letters and words to be “abstract” or “random” is not literature. LoA
I didn’t know about them commenting their own. That is just stupid. Recently there was a ficlet that said Once upon a time there was a bluberry that could talk then a bunch of jibberish then the end. ANd Kermitgrof sequeled it and made quiete a good series about talking fruits that I sequel twice too. One way to turn it around and make a stupid ficlet good. I don’t get why people write random stuff. I don’t think I will ever get it. LoA
I’ve seen some “ficlets” that were pretty much just blog posts. That sorta bugs me, but then I just do then ‘move on’ thing and ignore them. Unless they’re spamming the Most Recent list with ‘em.
