Better Living Through Chemistry

“What do you mean ‘not really a clinic’? I see doctors, and people in wheelchairs,” Marley said. He fidgeted with scratching an itch on his forearm.

Alex’s look returned to agitated. “Well, it’s a clinic, but not… I mean, these aren’t people people, but – how in the hell did you get in here?”

Marley stopped scratching. He noticed hard looks from the passing whitecoats. “The guards at the door said the place was in lockdown, but I told them I’m a doctor and that I work with you. They let me scrub down and come in.”

Alex rolled her eyes and abruptly picked up a phone at the nearest nurses’ station. After a few terse words with the other end, she grabbed Marley and started walking.

“This is a research lab,” she said quietly. “We do field testing on various chemical agents that – oh crap! You haven’t been immunized!”

She examined his forearm. The skin was beginning to crack.

“What in the blue hell is that?” Marley hissed.

Alex sighed. “I guess technically, there is an outbreak in here.”
