A Version of the Truth

For one crazy moment I debated whether or not to tell her the truth. I wondered how she would react. I decided to go for a version of the truth.

“OK, OK, but you have to promise not to get mad at him.”

“Him? Him who?” Jodi put her hands on her hips and raised her eyebrows. She looked distractingly cute. Focus, Jordan!

I sighed dramatically. “OK, it was Tom. But we were just messing around.”

Now it was Jodi’s turn to look shocked. “What?! My wittle Tomsie-Womsie would never do that! At least not without a good excuse! What did you do?”

I scoffed, amazed that Tom had managed to wrap this girl around his finger in less than 72 hours.

“Yeah, well, your ‘wittle Tomsie-Womsie’ is not as innocent as you think, Jodi. And besides, like I said, we were just messing around and it got out of hand.”

I heard a door slam shut and then Tom’s voice call out, “Yo, anybody in here?”

Jodi put a hand up to her cheek. “Tom!”

“Wait, Jodi, you never told me why you’re here -“

But she had already left the room.
