Overprotected
Mitch sighed. He looked so apologetic, “I didn’t say that.”
I didn’t know what to say. The conversation had gone so far off track than what I’d imagined and it had gotten so awkward that I was at a loss of words.
“I don’t know what to say,” I said, “I mean, I’m sorry that that’s the way I feel about the situation.”
He shook his head, “No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been so judgmental and overprotective. I mean, if that’s the way you feel…”
But I cut him off, “Wait? Overprotective?”
“Well, yeah, I mean, after everything you’ve told me about Josh which let’s face it, was a lot, I feel like I don’t want you around him,” Mitch confessed.
I thought I felt my jaw drop down to the floor, but it didn’t shockingly, “Why?”
“I don’t know. I know it’s not my place, but it’s just how I feel,” he explained.
This confused me. I mean, why would a guy be so overprotective over a friend? Unless…
“Mitch,” I grasped his attention again.
He looked up at me.
“Do you…” I started, “do you -”
But I was cut off.
