Pursuit

“So, pal,” the detective continued, “What exactly were you planning to do after you lifted this sewer panel? Jump in? Sounds like a reasonable theory to me. Okay, you wait here,” he said, after using one of the handcuffs to tie the murderer to a pole. He then jumped into the sewer.
But many feet below, the musician murderer had heard what was going on above and had fled, running through the sewer system he knew so well.
The detective, though, wasn’t gonna take the slip so easily. He followed the sound of splashing footsteps and snuck along the side of the tunnel so he’d think he wasn’t being followed. He’d already informed the police of where he’d tied up the murderer, and they’d be there soon. But his main worry now was not lose who he was chasing currently.
He must have done his job well, because the footsteps slowed down, most likely because the footsteps’ maker was unaware of his pursuer.
Suddenly the detective found himself in the middle of an intersection with about 5 entrances. And he wasn’t alone
