The “less favorable sounds” are the sounds of Peter’s son’s emo metal garage band attempting to make some sort of devil worship song material.
The “ugly object” is a wire sculpture his daughter made in art class.

Descriptions are pouring over the top! I think that works as a good counter balance when the reader is ultimately unable to determine, concretely, what really happens. You let us decide, and yet there is a mood of remorse when he looks away and the ugly object clatters on the linoleum. I sensed the fear of a guilty man in him. Great story.

Brutal description of a brutal act, without actually describing the act. I love how you described this scene, the ugly object clattering on the linoleum.
